Today the Press-Center of VII Kazan International Festival of Muslim Cinema held a meeting with a famous Russian screenwriter, director of the film «Alien mother» Denis Rodimin and actress Elena Serdyukova.
Denis Rodimin admitted that invitation to the Kazan Festival was a surprise for him. «We’ve never thought that our film would suit the format of the Festival, I also have to admit that I’d never heard about the Kazan forum before. I am sure that this festival has to be covered more by mass media. Maybe there is a sense in organization of the Festival’s permanent representative office in Moscow or organize additional screening of the film-winners in retrospective called «Echo of the Festival». This suggestion is connected with information vacuum: people don’t know what kinds of films are shooting in Muslim countries…»
«Alien mother» became the first experience of Denis Rodimin as a director of a feature film. The process of shooting took place in the summer 2010 in Moscow.
The main hero of the film is a Russian Muslim woman. She was born in Russia in the family of geologists. Her parents died during the business-trip in the Caucasus. Little Maria was adopted by the local people, got a new name Malica and started praying to Allah. She came to Moscow to find her daughter, which was recruiting by evil people to become a female suicide bomber.
The director thinks that theme of this film is actual nowadays. «Every year in Moscow terrorist attacks become the reason of people’s deaths, - Denis Rodimin told. – This situation hasn’t been changed for a long time. We began a process of shooting after the terrible explosions in Moscow. When we began editing of the film, the terrorist attack in Domodedovo happened. No comments…»
Elena Serdyukova who played Malika admitted that she immediately agreed to take part in the film. «The plot interested me. Moreover, I have eastern roots. I was born in Uzbekistan, my father is a Muslim and my mother is an Orthodox. I don’t divide people by their religious confessions, it is much more important for me what personalities they have».
The film budget was about $100, 000 that is not much for full-length feature film. «We almost did not have problems, because we did not have money, - Rodimin is joking. – But speaking seriously a new wave of directors shooting independent films with a small budget appears in Russia now. It is a vivid and “mobile” cinema about real problems of our life. Unfortunately in Russia there is no distribution system for such kinds of films while European countries have small movie theatres and cinema clubs where non-popcorn movies are screened». |
